I respect Uwe Boll

Yes, you read that right. I have a lot of respect for the man. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he’s a good director, or writer. That’s not what this post is about. It’s about respect. I’ll say it straight off the bat, every single bit of criticism he gets is deserved and justified. He is without a doubt the worst director there is, the negative Kubrick if you will. Alone in the Dark was easily the worst film I’ve ever seen in my life, and since then I’ve not watched another one of his films. It would be like putting my hand in fire a second time, right after being burned by it.

But seriously, I respect anyone who can face such criticism that’s dished out like the hatred that’s vented in Boll’s direction and still continue making movies, stay optimistic and just take it on the chin. Sure, he shifts the blame for the bombing of his crap movies onto the game companies he bought the right from not making movie tie-ins, and it seems a lot of times he doesn’t want to admit he makes bad films, but it’s still amazing to see him march onwards after so many critical and commercial failures. I’ve read that Uwe takes the time to read a lot of message boards, like imdb.com to see what people are saying about him. Who knows? He might even read this. Either way, it takes balls to face that phenominal amount of criticism. Well, it only takes one Boll. Sorry for the pun.

Aside from that, another reason I respect him is his ability to get a film made. He might be terrible as a director or writer, but as a producer the guy’s a genius. No sarcasm there, he really is a genius producer, and if you don’t believe me just consider what a commercial flop Alone in the Dark was, yet he managed to pull together the financing for several movies after that? If you’ve ever read interviews with him, he explains how he assembles his casts for films by leaving the casting for the very last minute before approaching actors and saying that there’s a film ready to shoot, the script has been finalised, pre-production is done and the money’s there, are you interested? Uwe Boll as a producer, gets things done.

Infact, I think he’s such a good producer, that it would be an excellent thing if he started to produce other people’s movies, not just his own. Considering how he continues to whip up increasingly large budgets for his films, and assemble some impressive casts (sometimes at less than their usual fee, as I’ve read, Ray Liotta agreed to do Dungeon Siege for a smaller paycheck, but don’t quote me) that I’d say there could actually be a lot of original movies produced by the KG Boll company. Sadly, another thing I’ve read about Uwe, is that he has a very real love of directing, so it’s unlikely he’s going to stop any time soon.

Uwe Boll, I respect you.
