According to this article, a new Resident Evil film is in the works under the title of Biohazard: Degeneration, and this time, it’s an all CGI affair. The fact that this is going to be a completely new take on the game, and has nothing to do with the Paul W.S. Anderson films is going to be welcome news to all fans of the game.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t hate the first Resident Evil film, it had a fair bit going for it, some noteworthy scenes, but lets face it, the plot only had some vague similarities with the game. The only things that really tie the film to the story is the Umbrella Corporate and T-Virus, and the brief moments of the mansion.
If anyone’s read George A. Romero’s Resident Evil script, then you know that the film could have been something great, rather than the consolation prize we were left with. Most of the charm of the first game was the mansion setting, it was eerie and claustrophobic, there was a sense of mystery, and it evoked many older films as well. Anderon’s effort just complete failed to capture the atmosphere, instead it’s a very action filled romp that never scares it’s audience for a second.
The idea of a new film would be fantastic, and although details are few, I really do hope that the proposed animated feature would capture something of the atmosphere that made the Resident Evil games what they were.
Now, if only they could do a decent adaptation of Alone In The Dark.
